This interesting tree is in the grounds of Goodnestone House. Both trees in the picture are Sweet Chestnuts and they are connected. At some time in the past, the lower branch of the larger left-hand tree, has touched the ground, produced roots and given rise to a new tree. This is called layering. To start with, sustenance was received from the parent tree but the section of branch connecting the two is now dead and the new tree is independent of the parent tree.
