There's a plum tree overhanging the footpath along The Street and most of its fruits look like this! This is Brown Rot Fungus (Monilinia sp) which affects other fruits too. It can spread very quickly especially when the fruits are touching.

The brown pustules on the surface of the infected fruit produce masses of spores, which are easily carried by wind and water, accounting for the rapid spread of the disease.
