These structures are the female cones of Alder. They will eventually ripen and release their small, wind-dispersed seeds. Last seasons dry and seedless cones can also be seen still attached to the twig. In autumn and winter, alder seeds are an important source of food for many bird species, including, Siskins, Redpolls and Goldfinches.
