Yew berries aren't true berries. The red, fleshy aril as the 'berry' is called is a modified cone. The aril encloses a single seed. All parts of the Yew, bark, seed and leaves, with the exception of the aril are highly poisonous. Birds, particularly thrushes, love the fruits, the poisonous seed passing through undigested and, in the process, aiding seed dispersal.
