Buddleia is a great shrub for attracting butterflies. So much so, that it is often referred to as the butterfly bush. The larger butterflies especially love it in particular Red Admirals, Peacocks, Commas, Painted Ladies and Small Tortoiseshells. Unfortunately, Buddleia is not native, it was introduced from China. It's seeds are easily spread and the plant is tenacious and not easily controlled. It will even grow out of cracked brickwork causing more damage. It is classified as invasive and causes headaches for Network Rail, where the yearly cost of eradication is significant. Meanwhile, let's just enjoy this Red Admiral nectaring on, what is, a very attractive flower.
