A reminder in the hedgerow along the Grove Road, that east Kent was once a thriving hop growing area. Up until a couple of years ago there was still a hop garden at Gt Pedding. The growing of hops is quite labour intensive and the brewing industry started importing cheaper hops from abroad. With the sudden surge in micro-breweries, English hops are, however, once again in demand for their unique flavours and aromas.
