Tree flowers are very much in evidence at the moment. Many are wind pollinated and produce a lot of pollen, much to the woe of hay-fever sufferers. Here is a selection of tree flowers from around Staple. Clockwise from top left: Oak, Walnut, Field Maple and Bird Cherry. The top two are wind pollinated and the pictures show the male catkins which produce the pollen. The female flowers are separate and smaller but go on to become the acorns and walnuts after fertilisation. The bottom two are insect pollinated, with the male and female parts within the same flower structure.
