Mining Bee nest holes

These miniature volcano's are popping up everywhere at the moment. They are made by solitary mining bees. Although there are usually lots of nest holes together, each is made by a single bee, which then lays eggs in the underground nest and feeds the larvae on pollen and nectar. The larvae pupates and the new adult emerges from the ground in spring. Look for these on bare ground often on well used footpaths like this one near Crixhall Court.
