This lovely Sweet Chestnut tree at the War Memorial Garden opposite the Village Hall is laden with its spiky fruits. The multiple and rather formidable spikes, ensure that the seeds within can reach maturity before being dispersed by feeding animals.

Without its protective armour, the fruit would be eaten by browsing animals like deer (perhaps not in Staple) before this stage is reached. Once ripe, the fruits burst open, the seeds fall to the ground and may be carried away by squirrels and birds such as Jays. Those not immediately consumed may be dropped or buried and have a chance of germinating to continue the species.
