These Beech trees at the Miller Woodland Trust site in Chalkpit Lane are rather conspicuous. Young Beech trees often retain their leaves over winter, a phenomenon known as marcesence. Hornbeam trees also do this. It may be advantageous to the plant as the delicate, pointy buds receive some measure of frost protection as a result.
