A well worn Peacock butterfly basking in today's sunshine. This battered specimen had probably hibernated through the winter months. Small Tortoiseshells, Comma's and Brimstones also overwinter as adults and are therefore the first butterflies to be seen on the wing in spring. Dead hedges, dense ivy and garden sheds are good butterfly hibernation spots.
