This strange plant is Herb Paris (Paris quadrifolia). I saw it today in woodland near Chartham. It is an ancient woodland indicator species and grows on chalky soils. There could well be sites for this plant in woods around Staple but most of the suitable locations are not accessible. It's a very symmetrical plant with four leaves and a single flower.
