Crab apple trees are intermittently spaced between crop apple trees in modern orchards. They are put there to aid pollination, without which there'd be no apples. The fruits aren't picked of course, so, at this time of the year they are a valuable food source. Chaffinches, Fieldfares, Redwings and other thrushes were busy in this orchard near The Groves this frosty morning.
